What Is my credit score based on?

Your credit score is based on several key factors that provide insights into your credit management habits and overall financial health. The most widely used credit scoring models, FICO and VantageScore, consider the following factors when calculating your credit score:
  • Payment history (35% of FICO score): Your track record of paying bills on time is the most influential factor. Late payments, missed payments, and collections can significantly lower your score.
  • Credit utilization (30% of FICO score): This is the amount of credit you’re using compared to your credit limits. Keeping your utilization below 30% is ideal for maintaining a good credit score.
  • Length of credit history (15% of FICO score): The age of your oldest account, newest account, and average age of all accounts impact your score. A longer credit history generally leads to a higher score.
  • Credit mix (10% of FICO score): Having a diverse mix of credit types (e.g., credit cards, installment loans, mortgages) can positively influence your score.
  • New credit inquiries (10% of FICO score): Applying for new credit results in hard inquiries, which can temporarily lower your score. However, the impact fades over time.
It’s important to note that while FICO and VantageScore consider similar factors, they may weigh them slightly differently in their scoring models. Additionally, your credit score does not factor in personal information like your age, income, employment history, or utility payments (unless they become delinquent and are reported to credit bureaus).
